UniCem supports Bayside Fishing and Water transportation training as a means of self reliance

On 23rd October 2009, UniCem formally held the a passing out ceremony for the Bayside Youth Forum’s Fishing and Water Transportation as a means of Self Reliance program.” The course commenced on 1st September and was aimed at developing the skills and techniques of 40 youths from the Bayside community. UniCem sponsored the skill acquisition under the auspices of the company’s CSR program.

UniCem ceases operations at, and mothballs the Calabar Grinding Station facility

Necessitated by the high cost of cement production at the Calabar Grinding Station, the United Cement Company of Nigeria Ltd. (UniCem) will cease its cement grinding operations at the Calabar Grinding Station facility and mothball the facility, effective 31st July 2009. All of the companies’ cement producing operations will be transferred to the new 2,5million tons per annum cement producing plant at Mfamosing. The new line at Mfamosing currently operates at a much lower operating cost and has excess grinding capacity in addition to producing cement from materials mined at site.

UniCem commitment to Business Development and Growth

The United Cement Company of Nigeria Ltd. (UniCem) inaugurated its 2.5 million tonnes per annum Greenfield cement plant at Mfamosing on 12th May 2009, completing the project phase initiated in 2005. Shortly after the commissioning, Dr Joey Ghose, MD of UniCem, having successfully achieved this significant milestone, announced his decision to spend more time with his family for personal reasons. Replacing Dr Ghose from end June 2009, is Mr. Didier Tresarrieu, a move which has the support and approval of UniCem’s four global and Nigerian shareholders, viz. Flour Mills of Nigeria, Holcim, Dangote Industries and Lafarge.

UniCem supports World Environmental Day

UniCem supported WED 2009 through addressing the importance of planting trees to mitigate the effects of global deforestation. To commemorate the day UniCem embarked on an education and awareness road show in the schools situated among local communities within the Akampa and Akpabuyo Local Government sphere of its operations. The road shows involved donating trees and flowers to seven schools along the 21km road to the factory, together with awareness discussions of the importance of protecting rain forests and planting of trees in and around CRS by UniCem and Local Government officers.

UniCem inaugurates its 2.5mta Greenfield cement plant at Mfamosing

The United Cement Company of Nigeria Ltd, UniCem, formally commissions its 2.5 million ton per annum Greenfield cement plant out at Mfamosing on 12th May 2009. The cement plant, the 2nd largest in Nigeria is an accomplishment, since it is one of the few start-up industrial investments in Nigeria in the last few years, and certainly one of the largest investments outside oil and gas in the South-South region of Nigeria. Work on the Greenfield cement plant started in 2005, when a contract to build a Greenfield plant with clinker capacity of 6,250 tons per day and 2.5 million ton per annum of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) was signed.
