Man Utd transfer round-up: Roma eye Edinson Cavani with Raphael Varane deal close

With Manchester United set to make Jadon Sancho their first signing of the summer transfer window, attention will now turn to their other targets.

A new midfielder and centre-back will almost certainly be brought to Old Trafford as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seeks to mount a Premier League title challenge.

The Red Devils could also attempt to sign a goalkeeper and a new right-back to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

With some members of Solskjaer’s squad failing to impress over recent seasons, departures could also be on the cards as the Norwegian attempts to improve his team’s quality.

Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Manchester United transfer news…

United ‘scout’ Rabiot

Manchester United sent a scout to watch midfielder Adrien Rabiot during France’s defeat to Switzerland at Euro 2020 on Monday night.

The Red Devils have made a new midfielder one of their targets for the summer transfer window, with Rabiot emerging as an option.

He currently plays for Juventus, but has endured a difficult spell in Serie A since joining from PSG in 2019.

And it appears the Frenchman is being looked at by United, with the Daily Star reporting the Premier Legaue side sent a scout to view the 26-year-old in Bucharest.

He stared the match deployed as a left wing-back before moving to left-back when Didier Deschamps changed his side’s formation – versatility that has perhaps attracted United’s eye.

But after playing out one of the games of the tournament in a 3-3 draw, France were knocked on penalties.

Varane deal closes in

Raphael Varane’s move to Manchester United appears to be closing in, with claims that an “agreement is total” between the Red Devils and Real Madrid.

The Frenchman is set to leave the Bernabeu having failed to agree a new contract with club president Florentino Perez.

Varane has developed into one of the best defenders in the world during his time with Los Blancos, winning four Champions League titles.

But that partnership appears to be at an end, with his contract entering its final year and Madrid forced to sell this summer to bring in a fee for him.

That situation has attracted United, who are searching for a quality partner for Harry Maguire in central defence.

And according to Spanish journalist Pipi Estrada, who appeared as a guest on El Chiringuito TV, “the agreement is total” between United and Madrid for Varane.

Roma launch shock Cavani move

In what would be one of the shock transfer moves of the summer window, Roma have launched a bid to sign Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan became a key player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season, scoring 17 goals and notching five assists.

But he only originally signed a one-year deal with the Red Devils and was linked with a move to Boca Juniors before he opted to sign a contract extension to stay at Old Trafford.

Despite that though, it seems he could indeed be on his way out of the exit door after just one season with Roma emerging as a possible destination if Edin Dzeko leaves the Italian capital.

According to the Calciomercato Show on CMIT TV, if Dzeko does depart then Cavani is the Serie A side’s top target to replace him.

They claim a “basic agreement” is in place between Cavani and Roma, but that United will demand a fee.
